We are delighted to announce that the local microbrewer Magpie Brewery will be sponsoring our closing party on Saturday 9th November at Castle Museum. The brewers themselves will be here to chat to you about their beers, whilst supplying a range of real ales for you to try during the official prize-giving event.
Magpie Brewery is a traditional microbrewery situated next to the Notts County Football Club ground, creating a range of real ales using only British Hops and Malts. They aim to be as environmentally friendly as possible using 'green' energy sources, recycling water, reusing bottles and keeping deliveries as local as possible. All spent grain is given to local farmers for pig or cattle food, and spent hops is used to compost and mulch their our own gardens or given to local allotment holders, meaning they create little to no waste.
In 2006 Magpie Brewery was set up and initially run by three friends, Bob Douglas, Ken Morrison and Nick Sewter (all Bridgford locals) who were all retired from their normal 'day jobs'; Nick was a teacher, and both Ken and Bob worked for the industrial relations trouble shooters, Acas. Sadly Ken passed away in 2010, but his name and legacy lives on whilst his role as 'head brewer' has been taken over by his son, Gavin.
From what was originally supposed to be a retirement project, the brewery has grown into a thriving business with their beers being available in a vast array of free house pubs around Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the East Midlands. Magpie bottled beer (a Castle Museum favourite) is all done in-house, and distributed locally.
"Magpie Brewery is delighted to be sponsoring the Nottingham Castle Open. As a small business, we are passionate about our roots in Nottingham and very keen to support other local enterprises. Our Castle, which hosts the hugely succesful 'Robin Hood Beer Festival' every October, is a great attraction in the City and it is a real pleasure to be able to help this competition for local artists."
