AXISWEB Prize Focus - words by Sheila McGregor, Director of Axisweb.

Axisweb - the online resource for contemporary art - has a long and supportive relationship with the Castle, not only have they supported the Nottingham Castle Open for 3 years now, but we regularly work with their brilliant filmmaking department.  You can see our latest collaboration with Fermywoods Contemporary Art entitled 'Make Believe: Re-imagining History & Landscape' , where Axisweb were invited to follow artist Shane Waltener as he installed his large scale installation in our grounds - For the Nottingham Castle Open 2013 Axis are offering One Year's Free Membership of their artist directory.  Regardless whether you apply for the Open this year, I can highly recommend that any practicing or emergent artist should consider such an Axisweb membership as it is a great and rewarding scheme to be a part of ; as an artist-member myself, I do speak from experience!

To highlight the prize and AXIS services I asked Sheila McGregor, Director of Axisweb, to contribute to this weeks blog:

"We’re delighted to be associated with Nottingham Castle’s Open Exhibition, because it represents a fantastic opportunity for artists and accords perfectly with our own remit for supporting the community of people involved with making and presenting contemporary art. gives artists and art professionals a web platform to showcase their work, access opportunities and make useful connections. Our directory of over 2,500 selected artists and art professionals is an essential research and promotional tool for anyone involved with contemporary art in the UK.

Visitors to the site can use our enquiries service to find the right artist or art professional for their brief, whether it’s a purchase, commission, exhibition project, residency or public programme. And any artist or art professional with a profile on Axisweb can access our carefully researched and vetted opportunities service, as well as our large and increasingly international audience-base.

Alongside our directory, there’s plenty of magazine-style content to keep you entertained and informed. We regularly make films about artists and new visual arts developments, and we commission written features from an extensive network of specialist contributors across the UK.

As a judge for the Nottingham Castle Open Exhibition in 2011, I was impressed by the sheer breadth of work submitted and the commitment of the curatorial team to supporting both new and established talent. There’s something very refreshing about an exhibition that welcomes all-comers and treats a wide spectrum of work with genuine respect.

From what I’ve seen since, the Nottingham Castle Open has gone from strength to strength. And it’s especially impressive that entry is now FREE – a wonderful concession to artists in this difficult economic climate. We’re looking forward to offering one artist from this year’s cohort of exhibitors a year’s free membership of Axisweb. The work of last year’s choice, Krystina Naylor, has made a very elegant addition to our directory."
